A few words about this blog:

The riding tours blog is dedicated to gathering information about equestrian vacations to help readers appreciate the advantages of equine travel and find the adventures which will suit them best. Foreign travel on horseback facilitates international understanding because riders form an instant bond with local people through a common love of horses. We strive to improve standards of horsemanship and the welfare of horses. At Equitours we believe that horseback riding tours are ecofriendly and healthy for the minds and bodies of riders

A magnificent time for riding

September 19th, 2007

As fall starts to take hold here in the USA, it is a wonderful time to escape to parts of Europe. The crazy tourist season is winding down and there are less people visiting these areas. Equitours has some great riding vacations in October in Portugal, Greece, Italy and Spain. And in the future we hope to offer more.

Roz, our Office Manager is on her way to Bulgaria tomorrow and will then proceed to Romania to scout out some new rides for Equitours. We hope she has a safe and fruitful work vacation and comes back with tales of amazing culture, great riding, wonderful food and fascinating scenery.

Horse Flu Epidemic in Australia

September 12th, 2007

Perhaps horse dentistry is a “cosmetic” application but what about vaccinations for horses? A necessary evil or something you can bypass?

Australia’s East Coast is in the midst of a flu epidemic. The horse flu is native to Australia and New Zealand and the vaccine was said to be effective until the recent outbreak. All horses in NSW have been quarantined and companies transporting products between farms have been asked to take special precautions. The racing industry is on hold as are any riding establishments such as those Equitours sells. This is the case even if your horse has been vaccinated.

We do not have a ride in Australia at this time but one we are looking into, has been temporarily closed due to the outbreak. In this situation it seems vaccinations are a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Dentistry…..for horses

September 4th, 2007

My Labor Day was spent hauling horses to the dentist. Yes, I did say the dentist.  The Bitterroot Ranch, in Dubois Wyoming, conducts a series of clinics throughout the season for guests, wranglers and some private groups. For the past 4 weeks Dr. Hyde has been conducting a Dentistry School for around 11 students from all over the world.

At the end of this time the students are qualified “horse dentists”.  So what exactly does this mean? Is this a career now? I have always recognized the importance of floating a horse’s teeth every 1- 2 years but I realize for many it may just be another penny in an ever increasing money pit, IE: your horse.

In Australia I had one horse who had the very best of everything but now between my husband and I we have 12 horses. We really can’t afford to give the same level of care to each of these horses now can we? Is horse dentistry among one of the essentials like shoeing and worming, as a prevention technique or can it wait and be used only if a problem were to arise?
