Strangles and Strep Throat
After a week off from office duties due to a bad case of strep throat, I am back in the office, for today anyway.
Strep throat is an awfully painful illness that really does take it out of you. I was sleeping for 14 hours after just sitting around watching movies and reading all day!
I am sure we are all familiar with the similar illness in horses- strangles. It spreads like wild fire and is painful for a horse lover to watch the effects and cycle of the illness. It is a long lasting threat that can be expensive and time consuming.
Vaccination has been recommended in the past for all horse owners. Recently the vaccination drug Equilis StrepE, was taken off the UK market. Veterinarians in the UK can now only recommend diligent stable practices such as changing water regularly, quarantining new horses and being on the look out for early warning signs of a horse not acting itself.
