Amendments to the Horse Protection Act
What is your stand?
There is renewed interest in the amendment of the Horse Protection Act after the recent 25 April meeting by the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Although the overall majority supported the legislation (see the websites below) there were a number of large prominent groups, such as the American Quarter Horse Association who opposed the ban.
The Act was to prohibit the “shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of any horse or other equine to be slaughtered for human consumption”. The following organization supported the ban.
World Society for the Protection of Animals
The largest and most conspicuous animal welfare organization, the SPCA, did not appear to have any information and/or opinion on this legislation on their website.
Personally I feel that the reasons given by the AQHA are warranted. Perhaps this is only because I live in Wyoming and worked in rural Australia where the most humane and economical solution to an unusable horse is to accurately shoot it quickly and painlessly between the eyes.
I am certainly a horse lover and am opposed to unsafe and unethical transportation of any animal but on the other hand what will become of all these unwanted horses….
