Ellen’s disclaimer about post-safari blogging

I am aware blog entries are meant to be entered in “real time,” but I am decidedly archaic, and doggedly scribble my thoughts in a journal with a pen while traveling. I have never packed a laptop, battery charger, and currency converter into my luggage, and do not intend to start now. Elephant tracks in BotswanaLike the majority of my clients, I spend the bulk of my work day behind a computer screen, connected to the outside world by telephones, fax machines and e-mail, cords and plug and the mysterious technology that makes them all function. Leaving that behind is the way I define “vacation.” Therefore, the following blog entries from my recent trip to South Africa and Botswana are lifted from the pages of my journal, like the masters, Hemingway and Van der Post and Dinesen, only nowhere near as articulate.
